It was a diamond in the rough. Situated in one of Makati’s busiest thoroughfares, it stood bravely like a beacon with its brick exterior and pretty window display, amidst the dull concrete buildings of the central business district. Stepping into Ilana boutique one afternoon, I felt like I had found a gem, a paradise of stylish – yet affordable –clothes.

Opened in August of 2008, Ilana boutique was initially conceptualized as a clothing line for full-figured women. It was the first attempt of the owner to venture out into retail – something that she – a well-traveled, fashion-entusiast – always wanted to do. In fact, the exterior of Ilana was inspired by the street shops of Milan’s Monte Napoleone, where the owner lived for a couple of years.

What started as a simple whim became, a little over a year later, a full-fledged business. Now, Ilana products are available in commissaries in SM Megamall Department Store, Landmark Trinoma. Plus, the brand has diversified to cater to the needs of a wider range of women – from cool, hip young women to sophisticated, career-driven professionals and stylish mothers.

Ilana is for the for the empowered woman. [It] is for the modern-day woman who wants to make the best impression even in a simple way as presenting herself,” says PR and Communication’s Katrina Vinluan. “Ilana’s style is versatile and stand out. It is also classic in the sense that it is wearable any day and any time at work or at dinner cocktails. But the best thing about Ilana products is that despite exuding glamour and sophistication in every piece, products remain very affordable to regular Filipino women who values her hard-earned money.”

Ilana is, indeed, “luxury minus the golden price tag”. I was pleased to see that tops made from imported fabric went from P800- P1,200 only, while dresses ranged from P1,500-P2,300. Not bad at all for such well-crafted pieces.

But where does their inspiration come from?

“Inspiration comes from a lot of different places the owner has traveled to,” explains Vinluan. “In fact, a lot of our materials are handpicked by the owner from places like Europe, Japan, Korea, Shanghai and New York. Ilana is a mixture of all these unique places, it’s Italian couture meets New York Soho meets Asian.”

Aside from office wear, cocktail gowns, stylish tops and dresses, Ilana also carries accessories and bags – including Germany’s Borella and Fancy Bags, endorsed by Germany’s famed actress Jenny Winkler. The brand also carries Ilana Golf, a line specially made for women who work hard and still find time to play hard as well.

With all the great things they have to offer, it is no surprise that Ilana has big plans for expansion. A collaboration with a sister brand, Cami, is in the works for young, trendy, petite figures.

Watch out world, Ilana is coming your way.
